Xbox 360 More Successful Than Original

I kind of sensed this intuitively, but it’s good to see some hard numbers confirm my suspicions.

When the first Microsoft Xbox hit the market, people were a little skeptical about picking up Microsoft’s first dedicated gaming console. At the time, the Sony PlayStation 2 was sitting at the top of the heap and it didn’t seem to matter what Microsoft and Nintendo tried to do. The PS2 was king.

The current generation of consoles has been a little different. The Wii has been more successful than anyone has anticipated, largely because it has been able to appeal to casual and non-gamers. The PS3 has enjoyed some success as a worthwhile Blu-ray player. And the Xbox 360 got the head start and has a terrific game library.

And so, the Xbox 360 has already sold more units than the original Xbox. The installed user base for the Xbox 360 now sits at 25 million worldwide. That’s in just three years and the 360 easily has at least a couple more years in it before the 720 takes over.
