Xbox 360 Getting Wii-Like Controls

It’s obvious enough that the Nintendo Wii has been a huge success for Shigeru, Reggie, and the rest of the Mario-loving team, but it also seems like every other system wants to compete with the Wii and cash in on its motion-sensing sensation. The PlayStation 3, for example, added something called SIXAXIS to the fray, tilting the standard PlayStation controller for motion-sensing controls. SIXAXIS didn’t go over so well, as far as I can tell, so it’s a little strange that Microsoft wants to give it a try.

There is a rumor floating around that Microsoft is working on a Wii Remote-like device for the Xbox 360. This new controller has a form factor that is closer to the Wii Remote than the SIXAXIS controller, but it has a big bulbous knob at the top for whatever reason. Personally, I think the MS-flavored controller looks more like the controllers that come bundled with Scene It games.

The difference is that these new Xbox 360 controllers get the same waggling fun as the Wii Remote. The development, they say, is being handled by Rare, the same people that brought us Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. Unfortunately, Rare is having a hard time “hitting its deadlines” and it’s unlikely that this Wii Remote-like controller will be able to hit its goal of a launch by the end of the year.

Gesture recognition on the Xbox 360? Would you buy into it?
