Video Game Based On Saw Under Development

Games based on movies (and vice-versa) do not blend well, but that doesn’t stop publishers from making them. A recent announcement revealed that the popular horror film series Saw is going to be turned into a game.

Underneath an eerie headline of ‘Oh yes.. There will be blood…’ a Brash press release sent out today reveals the title will be released in October 2009 – to coincide with the fifth film in the series coming to cinemas. The title is being developed for next-gen platforms and is being built using Epic’s Unreal 3 game engine.

The Saw series is known for its depiction of blood and violence. Its unique element is the involvement of traps. Far from being traditional snares that simply serve to catch victims, the traps in Saw are elaborate devices that cause dismemberment, disfigurement and death. An avenue of escape is always offered to the victim, but again that usually involves pain.

There are several avenues of gameplay that can be speculated on. Will you take on the role of a victim, figuring out how to get out of your trap and escape your confinement? Will you be a detective investigating Saw’s titular character Jigsaw? Will you be Jigsaw himself, constructing the traps before capturing your intended victims? Regardless of the gameplay, I’m already wondering about the amount of scrutiny and censorship this title will receive.
