This Could Be Worse Than the Red Ring of Death

What do parents do when they’re not around to supervise their children and their video game habits? They turn to the industry, of course, to help them achieve a new level of parental control. It was rumored and now it has happened.

Microsoft has announced the addition of the “Family Timer” on the Xbox 360, a system that effectively lets parents and guardians control how much video game time a child is allowed to enjoy in a given day or week. This parental control timer addresses “the demand for these types of options,” according to MS entertainment and device division president Robbie Bach.

When time runs out for little Jimmy, his beloved Xbox 360 will automatically shut off, even if he is mere steps away from the next save point. Talk about fighting the clock!

Microsoft says that 90% of parents have a restriction on video game time and this will allow them to enforce their wills without prejudice.

Now the problem is getting the parents to understand how to program the bloody thing in the first place… not that it matters. Little Jimmy is tech-savvy enough to bypass all these parental controls anyways.
