Super Monkey Ball Coming to Apple iPhone

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but today marked a very special moment in the lives of iPhone owners and enthusiasts. Steve Jobs took the stage, a hush fell over the crowd, and then he announced the free availability of the iPhone SDK. For those of you who don’t know, the SDK — software developer’s kit — offers an opportunity for anyone to create new software for the iPhone. This is through legitimate means and the programs can then be offered through iTunes.

Amateur programmers will love this development, but big dogs have stepped into the fray as well. EA announced that they are bringing Spore to the iPhone, and Sega says that they are going to bring Super Monkey Ball to the Apple mobile phone. As you can probably suspect, Super Monkey Ball is going to make excellent use of the integrated tilt sensor in the iPhone. Spore probably makes better use of the multi-touch display.

Could the iPhone prove to a solid competitor for the PSP and DS? According to Sega’s developers, absolutely. “This is not a cellphone game. This is a full console game. And we underestimated the power of the device. We had to fly in a developer to upscale the art for the iPhone.”
