Super Mario Kart in 11KB of Javascript

mariokart-java.png

It really is amazing what sort of things you are able to achieve through a few lines of Javascript. It wasn’t all that long ago that it took large teams of designers and programmers to create a game like this. Super Mario Kart was incredible for its day, introducing us to hurling green shells and driving around in speedy little go-karts. And now it’s been reduced to a mere 11KB of Javascript.

The game runs pretty smoothly and it even comes with music. The problem is that you don’t get the full slate of racers or tracks, nor is there a lap count. It’s just mindless driving around with no real finish to any race. Even so, the controls work just fine and it’s fun for a couple minutes of mindless enjoyment. It is strange that your opponents seem to “float” until you overtake them.

You can check out the Javascript version of Mario Kart here. I’m just waiting for a 11KB version of Street Fighter and I’ll be set.
