Study Shows That Gaming Is Good For You
Among all the negativity surrounding the psychological influence of gaming on young and old minds alike, a recent study reveals the opposite. Two Middlesex University researchers conducted research among 292 World of Warcraft players to answer a simple question: whether or not violence in gaming has a positive or negative effect on players. Excerpts:
Turns out that what gamers have been saying for years is actually true, and that playing a violent game not only doesn’t turn you into a rampaging sociopath, but has a demonstrably relaxing effect on players.
Sadly, while the results of the study are a brief public triumph for gamers, a comment by one of the researchers is cause for a bit of eyebrow raising.
“This will help us to develop a emotion and gaming questionnaire to help distinguish the type of gamer who is likely to transfer their online aggression into everyday life.”
While that goal will certainly be helpful, it still identifies gamers as potential aggressors. It’s not going to help the idea that people who play violent video games have a tendency to become violent themselves. We really need to move away from that kind of stereotyping, folks.
