Spore DRM Gets EA Sued
Enough is enough. A woman named Melissa Thomas has had enough of EA’s DRM shenanigans with Spore and has decided to sue the company for failing to disclose it. Specifically, the offending factor is SecuROM. Here’s part of what the lawsuit is contesting:
“What purchasers are not told is that, included in the purchase, installation, and operation of Spore is a second, undisclosed program. The name of the second program is SecuROM … Consumers are given no control, rights, or options over SecuROM. … Electronic Arts intentionally did not disclose to any such purchasers that the Spore game disk also possessed a second, hidden program which secretly installed to the command and control center of the computer.”
Can you imagine how Spore’s Wikipedia entry is going to look like a few months from now? Once you get past the gameplay and development sections, you’ll read about the dismal Amazon reviews, the limited installations for legitimate users and then there’s this lawsuit. This title is battered and beaten. You hear anyone else talking about the gameplay at this point in time? It’s buried under DRM.
