Sony To Release A Newer PSP?

If you’re planning to buy or upgrade a PSP this season, then hold that thought for a moment and read on. Recent rumors said that Sony is going to release yet another PSP version as early as next year. Is it following the path of Nintendo when it comes to handhelds? After all, with the DS phat, lite and DSi, we’re already looking at three models of the same portable console.

With 2008 on its merry way out, “publishing sources” have leaked news of a PlayStation Portable update next year to Eurogamer. The PSP 4000, a final refresh model, will appear in late 2009, say these sources, followed by an official successor to the PSP at a later point.

If the rumors are true, then one has to wonder what the new version will include. A better screen? Dual analog sticks, I hope? L2 and R2 buttons? Whatever the improvements are, there’s one thing that I’m really looking for: a larger library of games. Compared to what’s available on the DS, the number of PSP games is paltry. I seriously hope that things will change with the PSP 4000.
