Sony: PS3 & PSP

To clarify yesterday’s post about the PS3 compatibility list, Joystiq reports that “the simple fact of the matter is that the Euro PS3 hasn’t gotten its launch firmware upgrade.” Dave Karraker, senior director of communications at SCEA, explains that “No firmware update equals no software emulation.” To find out what titles are compatible, wait for the official list on March 23. Who knows, you might be able to get NRA Gun Club to work.

Adding further to Sony’s woes, US retailers have issued an ultimatum: Do something with the PSP or we’ll drop it.

Something needs to happen with the PSP, ASAP.

That’s the message retailers have, according to our sources, sent Sony. With sales of the PSP lagging (Sony’s PSP hardware shipments to retailers last Fall were down 72 percent over the year before, only a meager 10,000 units in the U.S.), word is that a few big name retailers have given Sony a mandate: drop the price or they’ll drop the system from their stores. Entirely. With shelf space at a premium, the expectation is for Sony to do something substantial to keep its hardware moving — or else.

So it’s kind of a mixed bag for Sony today. However unlikely that it might actually happen, will a PSP price drop convince you to get one?
