Save the cheerleader, save the world

I must apologize for the inane Heroes reference, but it’s almost fitting for today’s news story. Siliconera managed to get their hands on advance copy of Sim City DS, and one feature that really sticks out from their report is the “Save the City” mode. As you can see from the provided screenshot above, a city gets ravaged by some natural (or supernatural) disaster and it’s up to you to build the town back up to its former glory. Unfortunately, there don’t appear to be any cutscenes or animations in store of us that will let us view a giant King Kong-like ape wreak havoc on the poor citizens below. Other scenarios include (I’m not kidding) UFO invasions and solving traffic congestion.

Because the Nintendo DS isn’t nearly as powerful as your PC (or many other systems for that matter), the cities themselves are not animated as you play them. You won’t discover strolling pedestrians when you zoom in, for example. It’s a bit of a shame, as that was something that added a touch of a realism to this fantastic simulation franchise. But hey, well worth the omission when we get a giant ape, right? (I think he looks more like George from Rampage.)
