Puzzle Fighter HD Gets Drop Block Changes

Ah, puzzle games, how I love thee. It started with Tetris, grew with Dr. Mario, became musical with Lumines… I love puzzle games. One of my all-time favorites was Super Puzzle Fighter II, not only because it featured some kick-ass characters from the Street Fighter universe (the Darkstalkers characters didn’t interest me as much), but the gameplay was actually very fun, addicting, and challenging. It was killer trying to master the strategy.

Now that Capcom is bringing the gem-dropping classic to Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) and the PlayStation Network (PSN), they’ve decided to make a few changes to help even out the battlefield. The most noticeable alteration is that several of the drop patterns have been shifted around to provide more “balance.” For example, Ryu used to have columns that were all the same color, making them easy to crush with a single glowing jewel. That pattern has now been “broken up.” The drop blocks from Morrigan, Hsien-Ko, and Felicia have become much more complex.

Thankfully, Akuma and Devilot are just as impossible as before, and Dan, well, he’s just as useless as we’ve always known him to be. The only “normal” characters to stay the same are Ken and Donovan.
