PSP Sales in Japan Hit Major Spike

japan-psp.jpg

We already know that the DS Lite sells like hotcakes in Japan and that the PSP has been playing second portable fiddle in the land of the rising sun for some time now, but it seems like sales have suddenly surged in Sony’s favor, because the figures doubled last week, compared to the week prior. This propels the Sony PSP into the number two spot for the week, lagging only behind the DS Lite.

Looking at the Japan sales figures alone, we discover that 184,610 PSP systems were sold in Japan last week. This is more than any other video game system with the exception of Nintendo’s glossy money-printing portable.

What caused this sudden surge? We can’t say for sure, but it might have something to do with firmware update 3.80 and its ability to record 1seg TV shows.
