Previews: Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Advance Wars is a turn-based strategy series that first appeared in the Game Boy Advance and then eventually made the jump to the Nintendo DS. It’s like chess on steroids mixed with rock, paper and scissors. It’s chess because it’s a turn-based affair involving military units. It’s on steroids because you’ll have infantry, artillery, aerial and naval units at your disposal. It’s rock, paper and scissors because units have their strengths and weaknesses. Add in the terrain, unit number, factories, money, weather and commanders and you’ve got a recipe for some serious tactical fun.

If the trailer’s any indication, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin seems to be taking a darker turn. The previous games have always been lighthearted, with cartoonish renditions of tanks, infantry and other military units. This one looks like it’s going to be more serious.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is scheduled for a January 2008 release.
