Portal XBLA Download = 629MB

In general, downloads through the Xbox Live Arcade are kept to a relatively manageable file size. It doesn’t matter if you’re grabbing a track pack for Rock Band or a retro-inspired hit like Mega Man 9. However, the arrival of Portal: Still Alive could be setting one massive precedent. Not massive by PC standards, per se, but pretty massive by XBLA standards for sure.

Portal: Still Alive tips the scales at an impressive 629MB. Considering that the 20GB Xbox Pro only comes with about 12-13GB of usable space, this single title is going to take up quite a bit of space on your increasingly tiny hard drive. Owners of a 120GB Elite probably don’t need to worry as much, so long as they’ve got a good broadband Internet connection.

Microsoft says that this is the new standard for XBLA publishers, because they still have file limits as a general guideline. At the same time, they’ll consider bigger downloads “on a case-by-case basis, and will make exceptions when it makes senses to ensure the best customer experience.”
