Popular Mechanics On Holiday Recommendations
Today’s post comes from an unlikely source: Popular Mechanics. It posted its must-have games list for the holidays. What’s on the list? Mass Effect and Assassin’s Creed, but for different reasons. Here’s the one for Mass Effect:
But the sheer scope of the story, as well as the genuinely disturbing choices you’re forced to make (such as whether to allow genocide on one planet, in the hopes of winning the larger war), are real breakthroughs. And unlike past BioWare RPGs (e.g., the landmark Knights of the Old Republic) the combat feels like combat, instead of a shell for the Dungeons & Dragons-era dice-rolling mechanics cranking along behind the scenes. Like Bioshock, this is as much an action game as it is character-development Shangri-La, and the best unproductive week you’ll have all year.
You can check out what they had to say about Assassin’s Creed here. And you probably guessed it, it’s not pretty.
