OnLive Unveils Streaming Games Service
“In the cloud” is going to be one of the phrases that you’ll be hearing a lot of in the coming months, if you haven’t run into it already. The cloud is the Internet. The phrase itself refers to online services, so if your mail server is in the cloud, then your e-mail is hosted online and you don’t have an Exchange server.
So what does that have to do with games? A new company called OnLive is looking to apply it to gaming. By streaming games to your PC, Mac or TV, you’ll be able to play the latest titles without having to install them. It’s said that you won’t even need to have the latest hardware to be able to use it. TVs will require a plug-in device to be able to receive the stream. A controller and VoIP are among the other hardware included.
Here’s how it works: OnLive’s technology makes it possible to stream games, requiring users to only to download a 1mb plug-in to get in running. The minimum connection required to play 1.5Mbps for standard definition while the high-def content will require 5Mpbs. Players will pay a monthly subscription for the service. Additional charges may come afterwards, depending on the games themselves.
