Online Multiplayer Confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Details Inside

The prospect of jumping back into the Super Smash Bros universe is attractive enough. I’m already looking forward to battling it out as Zero Suit Samus, Diddy Kong, and Meta Knight. It’s going to be a blast to pit Luigi against Solid Snake. And then, it just got better. Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii will be online, letting you challenge other smashers from around the globe.

The official Smash Bros. blog has released details of online play for SSBB, telling us that there will fundamentally be two ways to play. The first will let you challenge familiar friends (presumably using a similar system as Super Mario Strikers Charged), but you can also use the “taunts” to bust out pre-typed sayings in speech bubbles. These are assigned to each of the four directions on the Wii-mote’s D-Pad.

The second option is to fight against everyone in the world. Here, no speech bubbles will be found, no usernames either. In fact, there’s not even a win-loss record, so the other fighters in the arena will be completely anonymous to you (and you to them). This barebones online gaming kinda sucks, in my opinion, and it would have been great if they allowed voice chat a la SOCOM et al. Oh well, some online is better than no online.
