Online Gamers Cross Genders A Lot

A recent study in MMOGs revealed that players do a lot of gender bending when they go online. Men play as women and women play as men. Why? Let’s find out.

When asked why they had experimented with virtual gender bending, study respondents gave a number of different reasons, including one female’s choice to avoid unwanted male attention and one male’s desire to experience a side of life which he was unable to access in reality.

The study shows that 70 percent of women play as men while 54 percent of men cross genders. I’m among the latter and my reason is simple: since these games are usually seen from a third-person perspective, I’d rather spend my time looking at a female character than a male one.

The researchers admit that the data isn’t as conclusive as they would’ve hoped considering the small sample size, but it’s a start. Hopefully we’ll learn more about online gaming behavior in the long run.
