Jack Black has associated himself with rock music for quite a while now. He’s one half of Tenacious D and he starred, sang and played guitar in School of Rock. Now, the actor wants to extend his persona, music and comedy to video gaming through Brutal Legend. Here’s what it’s about:

Brutal Legend is the latest brainchild of Tim Schafer, game development’s foremost humorist and creator of such hilarious games as Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Psychonauts. [It] is Schafer’s attempt to blend his two loves: funny videogames and heavy metal music. “This is not a game for heavy metal fans, in the same way that Monkey Island was not a game for pirates,” says Schafer.

Reading the source describe the game makes it sound like it has a genre of its own. It’s a mix of adventure, music and action. There’s even a driving sequence involved. Combat can be done by telling your minions to do your work for you or, if you prefer getting your hands dirty, you can do it yourself.

Brutal Legend is scheduled for a Q3 2009 release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
