On The Tomb Raider DLC & Going Mature

Remember that recent post about Tomb Raider going female-friendly? Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the recent games of the franchise, has had some of its staff laid off. Now they’re shedding some light on how Tomb Raider: Underworld was developed, including giving some information on the DLC.

“Ask anyone who is part of it and if they are honest they will tell you around 40% of the DLC was meant to be in the game itself, originally. But it was decided later on to take out those parts because they were expecting most sales on the 360 and the DLC the way it looked at the time was looking to be a bit ‘thin’. So we were asked to cut some parts out to be used in the DLC.”

If this is true, then the DLC isn’t additional content. It’s stuff that was supposed to be in the original packaging in the first place, which screams “ripoff!” all over the place. Take it as you will. There’s no way we can prove them anyway, but this only casts an even darker cloud on the troubled franchise. Regarding the female-friendly makeover, a report on MTV Multiplayer contradicts that a bit by saying that Tomb Raider might go for a Mature rating, a score that’s hardly friendly, female or otherwise.

Will the shift to a grittier, more hardcore Lara save the ailing series? They already tried that with Angel of Darkness, but I don’t think a comparison would be fair considering how bad the control and camera schemes were for that title. We’ll just have to wait and see.
