Official Patent Filing? Use a DualShock or Sixaxis Controller with PSP

Here’s a sketch from a patent filing and it’s got to be one of the stranger configurations I have ever seen. Apparently, patent #0070174531 envisions a “control docking unit” that could be “configured to accept a portable processing unit and provide alternate control operation of the portable processing unit.” As you can probably tell, the “portable processing unit” looks like a PSP, meaning that you may soon be able to use a DualShock controller in tandem with your PlayStation Portable. Want a second analog stick? Now you’ve got one.

To make things even more interesting, the patent speaks of a “wired or wireless communication link” and to my knowledge, there was never an official wireless controller for the PS2. Could this mean that the PSP could be getting some Sixaxis action? Connect your PSP Lite to your TV (using the new TV-out capabilities), and you’ve got yourself, quite literally, a portable PlayStation (2). Sweet.
