No Final Word Yet: Final Fantasy On The Xbox 360

A few days ago, Final Fantasy producer Shinji Hashimoto said that developing FF titles for the Xbox 360 were “a completely blank page”. It was certainly news for me, because I was hoping that they would follow Devil May Cry and jump into the Xbox bandwagon in light of weak PS3 sales. Square Enix was quick to clarify Hashimoto’s statement.

However, a spokesperson for Square Enix told GamesIndustry.biz, “Hashimoto-san was talking about the current situation” – which would suggest his comments shouldn’t be interpreted as forward-looking.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said he expects the next Final Fantasy to appear on PlayStation 3 exclusively – but observed that Square Enix will face a tough decision.

“The series has always been single console and given the Xbox 360 sell through in Japan, it would be hard to put the next Final Fantasy instalment on the 360 only,” he told GI.biz.

Square Enix is also developing an RPG called The Last Remnant, set to debut on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Is it possible that they’ll be using this game to gauge sales between the two systems? Either way, the future of FFXIII’s supported platforms is going to be a tough call for Square Enix.
