The rumor mill says that a new World of Warcraft expansion is in the works. Blizzard has not given an official announcement yet, but a recent filing in the US Patent Office might as well be one.

The latest evidence signaling that Blizzard’s next expansion is nigh comes by way of the online database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Filed under the word mark “Wrath of the Lich King,” a trademark for the name was issued to Blizzard on July 28. Wrath of the Lich King was submitted with a filing basis of 1B, which, according to US Trademark Law, signifies “intent-to-use.” According to the USPTO, “An ‘intent to use’ application must include a sworn statement (usually in the form of a declaration) that applicants have a bona fide intention to use the mark in commerce.” [emphasis in original]

“Wrath of the Lich King” sounds very Tolkien-esque, so I’m going to expect a few LOTR-inspired elements in the new expansion. Also, it might shed light on Arthas Menethil, whose fate, up until now, has yet to be revealed.

We’ll keep you updated when the expansion is made official. Stay tuned.
