Netherlands Becomes Test Site for Hack-Proof PSP

Just because you ignore it doesn’t mean that it will go away. Video game piracy is at an all-time high with all sorts of mod chips available for the DS Lite, Xbox 360, and even the Nintendo Wii. One platform that homebrewers have had a field day on has been the Sony PSP, particularly those of the firmware 1.50 variety. Sony has worked hard on a number of countermeasures, like upgrading the firmware and changing the motherboard, but inevitably, the hacking community finds their way around these speed bumps and proceeds as usual.

Well, it seems that Sony is ready to throw another curve ball out there, but they’re only going to test this new anti-piracy measure in the Netherlands for now. The electronics maker has reportedly pulled all of the portable gaming systems from the Dutch market in preparation of replacing them with “new ones that are incompatible with firmware flashing. Supposedly, poor game sales in the region has led to such a drastic action on Sony’s part.”

No word on whether similar measures will be taken in Canada and the United States.
