Mii Channel on the DS: What Could Have Been

miids.jpg

Shigeru Miyamoto has openly said that he’s been working on the idea of a Mii Channel for quite some time, although the term “Mii” is relatively new. It’s just that the hardware wasn’t there, the implementation just wasn’t right, and so he didn’t launch it until the very family friendly Nintendo Wii came around. That said, House of Nintendo stumbled upon this screenshot from what appears to be an early developmental model of the Mii Channel on a Nintendo DS. The interface appears to be nearly identical to that of the Wii, except you’d be using a touchscreen instead of a motion-sensitive remote, of course.

A Mii in your pocket. Sounds like it could have been a good idea, particularly for all those WiFi Connection games. Can you imagine instead of having your standard character drive a kart emblazoned with a simple logo, you drive around in Mario Kart DS as your Mii character? The possibilities are endless.
