Microsoft Holds Fire Sale For Xbox 360 HD DVD

HD DVD is dead. Nearly all of the big dogs — with the strange exception of LG — have decided to abandon ship, but they’ve still got to figure out what to do with existing stock. Microsoft has announced that they will stop producing the HD DVD add-on drive for the Xbox 360, but they’ve still got plenty sitting their warehouse with nowhere to go. What can they do?

The only thing they can do, apparently. They’ve slashed the price significantly on the HD DVD player, bringing it down to a very affordable $50. That’s American and the new price is already being reflected at a number of major retailers. That said, when I checked the website for Best Buy Canada, they still have the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive listed at $129.99. Maybe it just takes some time for this to filter across the border.

Is this a deal or a waste of fifty bucks? You decide.
