Metareview: Mega Man ZX Advent

My thoughts on Mega Man ZX Advent:

  • Expect the difficulty to be up a few notches. The game has a tendency to be punishing at times, but nothing will frustrate you more than the save system. If you run out of lives, you start from your last save point. Each stage is divided into 3-4 sections, so if you used up two lives just trying to get to the fourth section and end up dying after a 5-second boss fight, you will have to start from your last save point. This means usually means starting over, because save points are a rarity.
  • The map system isn’t very useful. For a side-scrolling game, it’s still easy to get lost in some of the larger stages.
  • The overall gameplay experience, while frustrating at times, is still pretty good. You’ll appreciate all the effort you put in when you’re near the end: previously inaccessible paths will open up, terrain will become easier to navigate and dispatching enemies will become faster. Yes, you will have fun in this game, but you have to overcome the frustration first.
