Metal Slug Hits Wii Virtual Console
It may have started with games like Contra on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, but the side-scrolling shooter has evolved greatly since those days. Even so, the most fun that I’ve ever had with games like that are the ones that involve no greater than three buttons and one of the best franchises in this genre has got to be Metal Gear.
I can’t even begin to count how many quarters I popped into Neo Geo machines growing up, playing all the different iterations of Metal Gear. Yes, I realize that just about all of them were nearly identical — you ran to the right and shot everything in sight, saving slave and riding tanks along the way — but Metal Slug was just too much fun to ignore. The inclusion of different guns made it an absolute blast (no pun intended) too.
You can now get the equivalent of unlimited quarters for about nine bucks, because the original Metal Gear has arrived on the Wii Virtual Console. You can go it alone or tackle this game with a friend. It’s available now for 900 Wii Points.
