Metal Gear Solid 4 Too Big For Blu-Ray

So what if Blu-ray has effectively won the format war against HD DVD? So what if Blu-ray can stash up to 50 gigabytes of data on a dual-layer disc. According to Hideo Kojima, the Blu-ray format still isn’t big enough for his games. Metal Gear Solid is a humongous game and Kojima said that he had to make several sacrifices, including data compression, just to get the game to fit on a 50GB disc.

Kojima: For us, we’re not still not satisfied with the quality we can do. You know, there’s not capacity space.

Interviewer: Wait, wait a sec. Saying there’s not enough capacity, are you talking about Blu-ray?

Kojima: That’s correct. There’s not enough space at all. (laughs) …There’s not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress.

We knew that MGS4 was going to be big, but over 50 gigabytes big? Wow. Now you’ve got to wonder how they’d go about stuffing this epic title into a Xbox 360-friendly format…
