Mega Man 9 Was Supposed to Be 3D?

Mega Man 9 is easily one of the most popular titles available through the Wii Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network, because it captures the very essence of your nostalgic inclinations while offering enough of the new stuff to warrant a purchase. You know, like the first female boss character.
As it turns out, though, the original plan for Mega Man 9 was actually to bring a lot more “new” and downplay the “old”, much more so than what the final product ended up being. In an interview with 1Up, producer Hironobu Takeshita says that the 8-bit style almost didn’t happen, because Capcom management wanted to make the game 3D and “new”-looking.
Thankfully, they eventually opted for the retro-style graphics. They were originally worried that by taking this route, they would alienate new gamers and would only appeal to existing Mega Man fans. This limits sales potential, but they also figured out that 8-bit graphics were a lot cheaper to produce too.
