Mario Kart Wii Offers Traditional Controls Too
As excited as I am about the prospects of playing Mario Kart Wii, I’m not exactly looking forward to using the new Wii Wheel. This is thanks to the less than stellar experiences I had racing around in Excite Truck, Need for Speed, and other driving games on the Nintendo Wii. The controls just aren’t as responsive as they are when you cruise around using a d-pad or an analog stick.
Thankfully, it has been revealed that Mario Kart Wii will boast several different control schemes, not unlike the configuration that we see in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In addition to the Wii Wheel — which serves as a docking station for the Wii Remote — gamers will also have the opportunity to use a Remote+Nunchuk combo, the Classic Controller, or a GameCube controller. These last two styles will probably mimic classic gameplay better than the first two options.
The guys at 1Up had a chance to give Mario Kart Wii a whirl and they determined that using the Wii Wheel peripheral “took a little while to get used to” because they were “constantly over-steering.” In the end, they decided that the “Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo offered the best of both worlds; it was much easier to perform jump tricks (simply shake the two joypads) than awkwardly reaching for the directional pad on both the classic and GameCube controllers.”
