Mario and Sonic Compete at 2008 Olympics

This could prove to be the grandest event of all-time, not because the world is gathering in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but because there is a video game being developed wherein a pudgy Italian plumber will take on a super-speedy blue hedgehog in a series of Olympic events to determine who is the greatest video game mascot of all time. Temporarily named “Beijing Olympics”, this title will pit Mario from the Nintendo camp against Sonic from the Sega camp.
The concerted effort could easily be one of the best sports titles we have ever seen, especially if it captures the same kind of whimsical appeal as other Mario sports games we’ve seen in the past, like Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis. I have a gut feeling that Sonic might have an advantage in the 100-meter dash, though.
Look for the monumental Olympic video game on the Nintendo Wii and DS “later this year.”
