id Software On PC Gaming

id Software’s Steve Nix is seeing and recognizing that former hardcore PC gamers are now shifting to consoles. id Software is the company that made first-person shooters a household name in PC gaming. The source article reveals that while id still remains loyal to PCs, it can’t ignore the financial impact of consoles.

“There’s no console out there that’s as powerful as a God machine right now, with a Quad-Core and a GeForce 8800 – it’s very hard for any console to compete with that.”

“So you still have PC players, and some players are just console guys, but have players moved over? Absolutely. We love PC gaming, and we continue to support PC gaming – but you can’t ignore the market realities and the size of the console market these days.”

He cites the expensive cost of high-end PCs as the cause of the shift. With gaming rigs reaching the $1500-$2500 range, the price tag of consoles looks very cheap, prompting some players to use them instead of their PCs. In some cases, they continue to choose consoles over their PCs even if they have the hardware to support the games.

Based on experience, I remember that it was the original Halo that truly brought the FPS genre to consoles. Prior to that, FPS games were on PC territory only. Somehow Bungie managed to translate the shooting experience and controls to the Xbox, expanding the reach of consoles forever. Shooters happen to be the genre that id Software specializes in, so creating an FPS title for the consoles is probably a very tempting idea right now.
