Guitar Hero on the Commodore 64
Before we got to stomp on a goomba in Super Mario Bros, before we experienced blast processing with Sonic, there was a little gem of a computer called the Commodore 64. Toni Westbrook is a particularly big fan of this 25-year-old technology, but he has decided to mate it with one of today’s hottest trends: Guitar Hero. The net result is something that he calls Shredz64.
As you can imagine, the Commodore64 isn’t capable of handling MP3 files or massive concert animations, but this custom game is actually very good for what it is, especially since Toni has created an adapter that lets you use the real Guitar Hero controller from the PlayStation. Gameplay is identical, including an applause meter and his version of Star Power.
The music comes from SID files, so it’s going to sound pretty 8-bit, but that’s okay. Skip to about 4:30 and listen to Toni play the Overworld theme from the original Legend of Zelda. Take that Metallica!
