GPS-Aware Nintendo DS Game Uses WiFi
First, it was the directional pad. And then we got treated to analog sticks and trigger buttons. Part of the latest craze has to do with motion sensitivity and touchscreens. Well, the next frontier for video games appears to be location awareness, as evidenced by Plundr, a game created by the team at Area Code Inc.
Originally released for the PC, Plundr is now reportedly being ported over to the touch-tastic Nintendo DS.
Kotaku writes:
In Plundr you sail from island to island aboard a pirate ship buying, selling and fighting for goods. The twist is that your physical location in the real word dictates what islands you’ll find nearby. The game is driven by @Loki’s Skyhook Wi-Fi positioning system and the DS’ built-in WiFi.
My question is… how does this game work when you’re outside of a WiFi hotspot?
