Gaming on Vista, Wii Sales and Rockstar’s New Game

Vista Gaming

If you’re someone who hasn’t upgraded to Windows Vista yet because your primary concern is game compatibility, then we have something in common. Thankfully, Jason Cross from ExtremeTech took the liberty of testing today’s popular PC games and tried them out on Microsoft’s new OS. The verdict?

The final version of Vista is an A- gaming platform, dragged down to a B- by rough drivers—assuming the driver situation is improved in the coming weeks and months, Vista will be a great gaming OS. Even though I installed and tested a lot more games this time around, nearly all of them worked quite well, and only a handful needed just a minor tweak or two, like running the game as Administrator. Steam is hit-or-miss: the app and all its games seem to work fine, but the way it interacts with the Games Explorer is erratic.

Is it enough to convince you to get Vista? I’ll leave that to you. As for me, I’ll wait for the drivers.

Wii vs PS3 Ratio = 4:1

Fact: In Japan, there are 4 Wiis sold per 1 PS3. According to Media Create (don’t bother to click on the link unless you can read Japanese), the Wii and the PS3 sold 83,754 and 19,996 units respectively. I’m sure we’ve all got opinions as to why the PS3 isn’t so hot right now. Mine’s pretty simple: there are currently no games compelling enough to justify buying a PS3. When Final Fantasy XIII or Metal Gear Solid 4 come out, I’ll take a look at the numbers again. Maybe things will pick up for Sony’s console by then. Or maybe not. For now, let the Nintendo fanboys rejoice. We’ll see if the PS3 fanboys will get their day when the PS3-exclusive titles are released.

Rockstar’s Next Game: Manhunt 2

Rockstar Games, the controversial game developer behind Grand Theft Auto 3 and Bully, announced that their next game is Manhunt 2, a to sequel 2003′s Manhunt.

“With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward,” said Rockstar cofounder Sam Houser.

Manhunt 2 will be available for the PS2, PSP and the Wii in the summer of 2007. Personally, I’m interested that the Wii was mentioned. Nintendo has a reputation of steering away from violence in games. One of the classic examples of this is the console version of Mortal Kombat 2. The SNES version of the game had green “blood” while the Sega Genesis version retained the original red. The first Manhunt was a very violent game and I doubt that the sequel will be any different. Is Nintendo taking a different stand now? Are Wii owners going to play a heavily-censored version of the game? We’ll post more details as soon as they become available.
