Freeloader Latest Victim of Wii System Update

Nintendo sent out a system update for the Nintendo Wii yesterday and those of us who noticed the blue glowing disc slot proceeded to do the update without much of a thought. New and better, right? It turns out that this latest Wii system update kills off some of the support for non-Nintendo applications for the Wii.

The first victim was the Twilight Hack. This hack let you use an exploit in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to play some homebrew games and “free” Virtual Console titles. The Wii system update effectively closes the door on this hack. That’s not where the carnage ends, however.

It seems that this system update also kills off support for Freeloader. This disc had previously allowed Wii owners to play titles from other regions without having to do any physical modifications to their game systems. If you try to load Freeloader after the newest update, you get an error message. No more playing imports, I guess.
