Four Reasons Why the PS3 Has Been Pirate-Free

Just about every video game console on the market today has been hit with piracy and hit hard. We turn to the Xbox 360 and see people dangling external hard drives from beyond the red ring of death. We look to the Wii to discover a myriad of mod chips. The portable world isn’t immune either with both the Nintendo DS and PSP been hacked and slashed to allow for pirated games and homebrew applications.

The one system that has thus far been able to escape the clutches of piracy, ironically enough, is the Sony PlayStation 3. PH Gamer has compiled a list of what he believes to be the top four reasons why the PS3 has been safe from piracy and it’s quite the intriguing argument. His four reasons are:

  1. Hardware complexity: The PS3 is pretty freaking complicated.
  2. Blu-ray: Who wants to download 50GB files and then burn them on insanely expensive burners?
  3. Region-free games: Part of the pirate credo is to import games from other regions. The PS3 is region-free so this motivation isn’t there.
  4. High price point: The PS3 is still too expensive for many modders to bother with.
