Fallout 3 To Retain Trademark Bloody Mess

One of the things that made Fallout 1 & 2 so memorable was the combat system. Given the right amount of skills, it was possible to take out foes with one shot, thanks to the aiming system that allowed you to hit specific points on a target’s body. Logically, the eyes were the most rewarding, often resulting in a fatal hit. And even if it didn’t, the shot almost always incapacitated your foe in some way, like messing up his sight bad enough for him to miss you when it became his turn to attack. Again, given the right circumstances it was also possible to “read” death in the most gruesome ways possible. Sure, the animations were limited, but the descriptive text more than made up for it, giving us politically incorrect gems like “Female Raider was critically hit in the groin for 21 hit points. Her child bearing days are over.”

Fans of the Fallout series will be happy to note that we’re going to get plenty of gore with Bethesda’s latest effort. Here’s a screenshot of VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System), which lets you pause the game so you can aim your shots.

Which will hopefully give you this:

Pretty, isn’t it?
