Fallout 3 Introduction Sequence

CVG has a very extensive article on the upcoming Fallout 3, specifically how the introduction moves forward. Here are excerpts, focusing on how the initial combat plays out:

The simple way is to aim the hollower end of your weapon towards an oncoming foe and click your old friend the left-mouse button, but thankfully it isn’t always that simple. Your V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) means that, should you have enough action points, time can be frozen and specific shots or swipes made – with each potential hit area outlined in a fetching green timbre with percentage likelihoods for your attack hitting home depending on your skills and attributes.

Fallout 1 and 2 used a turn-based combat system based on action points. For example, it usually costs four action points to shoot, so if you had a total of eight then it meant you could shoot twice per turn. The recharging action point system to be used in Fallout 3 is similar to what was used in Fallout Tactics where your action points replenished over time, instead of taking turns with your opponents.

Judging from the article, this is going to be more than “Oblivion with guns”. If Bethesda does this right, the Fallout series is going to earn new admirers while managing to keep all but the hardest of the hardcore fans. Read the source for more details.
