Donkey Kong 64 Swinging Its Way to Nintendo DS

Just as the Game Boy Advance was fundamentally as powerful as the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo DS is fundamentally as powerful as the Nintendo 64. We’ve already seen pseudo-ports of N64 classics like Star Fox 64 (Star Fox Command), Mario Kart 64 (Mario Kart DS), and Mario 64 (Mario 64 DS), so this latest rumor shouldn’t exactly feel like it’s coming out of left field. Well, except for the fact that it’s a Rare-owned property, and we all know about Rare’s relationship with Microsoft these days.
Whatever the case, the current word floating about on the interwebs is that Rare isn’t necessarily thinking about bringing Donkey Kong 64 to the Wii’s Virtual Console, being much more interested in repackaging the gorilla adventure in a portable kind of way on the Nintendo DS. Given that the original required the RAM expansion pack, it’ll be interesting to see what sacrifices, if any, will need to be suffered in order to bring DK64 to our favorite dual-screened machine. The controls were pretty bad in Mario 64 DS, so I hope they address that too.
