Dissidia: Final Fantasy Impressions
![]()
Dissidia: Final Fantasy isn’t the first time that FF characters have been involved in a fighting game. Cloud, Sephiroth and others from Final Fantasy VII made guest appearances in Ehrgeiz. What’s notable is that Dissidia is the first Final Fantasy fighting game. I had a chance to play the Japanese version over the weekend and here are my impressions.
If you were concerned about the framerate like I was, fear not. The game plays smoothly on the PSP Slim and you can do all those flashy moves without seeing the action stutter or slow down. Speaking of moves, one thing that I’d like to nitpick about is that some of the special effects get in the way of what’s happening onscreen. Executing a sequence of combos is great and all that, but if you can’t determine what actions your character is making, it’s hard to appreciate all that flash.
I’m still working my way through the translation and controls, but for the most part, it feels pretty solid. It’s a bit unsettling to be fighting in 3D space where you have to be concerned about attacking above and below instead of just side to side, but overall, it’s not too bad. Considering its RPG roots, Square Enix has a good fighter with Dissidia. I’m pretty stoked about the English version because of it.
