Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars: Metareviewed

A good friend of mine is big Real Time Strategy (RTS) freak. He has played just about every RTS game that has ever been released on the PC, from the legendary Warcraft series (before it became a World of Warcraft) to Age of Empires. Command & Conquer holds a special place in his heart, so it should come as little surprise that he’s been totally stoked over Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

Now, when it comes to most video games (and movies), sequels aren’t nearly as good as the originals. They usually take the same formula, throw in some eye candy, and call it a whole new game. There are exceptions to this rule, of course, like how Street Fighter II is a million times better than Street Fighter (one). Does the same hold true for Command & Conquer 3? Let’s see how it’s held up against critical scrutiny (these scores are out of 100).

  • Yahoo: 80
  • Gamespot: 90
  • Eurogamer: 80
  • Games Radar: 80
  • GFW: 90

Those are some pretty impressive scores, but this comment by Eurogamer is certainly worth nothing:

It’s not really even trying to be a serious RTS – it just wants to live up to its name. You command, usually by drawing a big rectangle around everything on screen, and then you conquer, usually by then right-clicking on an enemy power station so their defences run out of juice and you can then kill everything else…this C&C is about entertaining rather than challenging.
