Combat For X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Video games based on movies are usually just cash-ins, but that doesn’t mean they’re all mediocre. The game that’s going to be partnered with X-Men Origins: Wolverine is going to be a brawler. Is it going to be a button-mashing extravaganza or is the combat system actually going to have a backbone worth dissecting? Read on.
…Origins’ action looks fast, pretty, and devastatingly visceral, evoking the recent Ninja Gaiden titles…albeit with a more accessible structure. Origins relies on three options — light attacks, heavy attacks, and grabs, mapped to one button apiece — but doesn’t ask players to memorize long combo strings.
Jumping and context-sensitive button-pressing will be part of the action. The developers cite God of War, Devil May Cry and even Super Smash Bros. as influences to the upcoming title. Combined with the above-mentioned Ninja Gaiden, all games are A-list titles that will certainly raise expectations. The screenshots are really promising, but if history is to be remembered, I wouldn’t get my hopes too high.
