Cheaper, Slimmer Sony PS2 To Launch Next Year

When I talk to most people about getting a new video game console, the choices are usually limited to three options: Party gamers will consider the Wii, FPS enthusiasts will think about the Xbox 360, and Blu-ray aficionados will take a gander at the PS3. Lost in the mix, however, is last generation’s dominating combatant, the PS2.

Well, it seems that while Nintendo and Microsoft have more or less abandoned the GameCube and Xbox respectively, Sony isn’t giving up on their PlayStation 2 just yet. In fact, there’s word that a newer, sleeker version of the PS2 is getting slated for next year. It’ll have an internal power supply, it’ll be even skinnier, and it’ll come in at a price of US$99.99. Seeing how the loonie is worth more than the greenback these days, I’d expect Canadian pricing to be fairly similar.

Sony says that the PS2 should last about ten years and the system just turned seven last week. Three more years of PS2? Really? Well, this “new” system is still a rumor, so we’ll wait until we see the proof in the pudding. Whatever that means.
