Call of Duty: Black Ops Launch Sets New Entertainment Record
If there was any doubt as to whether the video game industry has usurped Hollywood in all the ways that matter, then the recent release of Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops should settle that debate once and for all. Remember Avatar? The James Cameron 3D pseudo-animated Hollywood juggernaut that smashed all kinds of box-office records? Call of Duty: Black Ops just made Avatar look like child’s play.
Avatar raked in $232 million on its opening weekend. Call of Duty: Black Ops sold in the US and UK alone over 5.6 million copies grossing $360 million in its first 24 hours. This makes Call of Duty: Black Ops the biggest entertainment launch in history.
“There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million.” Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick
