Blu-ray Coming to Xbox 360 This Christmas?

And the rumours are back! When the Sony PlayStation 3 first hit the market, we were still amidst a format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. Sony backed the eventual winner, Blu-ray, whereas Microsoft backed HD DVD via an add-on for the Xbox 360. Now that HD DVD is dead, what is Microsoft going to do for high-def content on its gaming console?

Well, chalk this one up in the rumor column, but it seems that Microsoft is indeed working on a Blu-ray drive for its Xbox 360 and, like the HD DVD drive before it, the Blu-ray functionality will come in the form of an external drive. This Blu-ray goodness will reportedly come from Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp and it will retail between $100 and $150.

Considering that you can get an Xbox 360 Pro for $299 and if the Blu-ray drive is $100, then you have a total cost of $399. That’s the same price as a 40GB PS3. Competition much?
