Ballmer Hints At Xbox-Flavored Blu-ray Support
HD DVD is dead. I think we can all agree on that front, seeing how everyone from Toshiba to Wal-Mart has jumped off of that sinking ship. Now that Blu-ray has effectively declared victory for this round of the format war, you’ve got to wonder how the Microsoft Xbox 360 is going to fit into the mix. After all, that HD DVD drive is pretty much useless in a next-gen battle, right?
Microsoft held its Mix ’08 Internet Conference in Las Vegas this week, and CEO Steve Ballmer took a few moments to discuss the company’s perspective on the whole situation and he seems to be indicating that a Blu-ray drive could be on the way for the 360. In this own words, Microsoft will support Blu-ray in “ways that make sense.” Whatever that means. Whether this translates into a standalone Blu-ray drive, an Xbox 360 add-on, or no device at all remains to be seen.
