50 Million Nintendo DS Units Sold

The Nintendo DS (when you consider the DS Lite as being one and the same) is the fastest selling video game console of all time, but it is not yet the best selling console of all time. That record is still held by the almighty Game Boy, but based on the pace that Nintendo’s touch-tastic gamer is taking, it shouldn’t have too much trouble eclipsing that mark. Especially when they’ve convinced grannies and soccer moms to play Brain Age and Nintendogs too.

In any case, the Nintendo DS recently hopped over the 50 million mark in sales, putting it just shy of halfway to the astronomical figure of 119 million units sold of the Game Boy. These are worldwide sales numbers. That said, it took the DS only three years to get to 50 million, whereas the Game Boy took 16 years to get to 119 million.

The question isn’t whether the DS will eclipse the Game Boy. The question is when.
